Daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer, Diana married Prince Charles in St Paul's Cathedral, London 1981, the first English bride of a royal heir since 1659. She is descended from the only sovereigns from whom Prince Charles is not descended, Charles II and James II. She had two sons, William and Henry, before her separation from Charles 1992. Charles and Diana's decision to separate was announced by Prime Minister John Major Dec 1992, when he stated that they had no plans to divorce, and that their constitutional positions were not affected. The Church of England issued a statement saying that the separation would not prevent Charles from leading the church. However, Diana admitted in a television interview Nov 1995 that she had had an affair following her separation from Prince Charles, and that she had suffered from bulimia and practised self-mutilation.
